Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona: Argentina captain won't sign new contract

Barcelona have announced that Lionel Messi will leave the club after financial problems
prevented them from agreeing with the forward on a new contract.

Messi, 34, has been a free agent since his previous terms expired on June 30, but ESPN revealed in July that a loose agreement over a five-year extension had been reached.
However, Barca have been unable to register Messi's new contract with LaLiga while complying with the league's financial fair play rules.

Barcelona said in a statement: "Despite having reached an agreement with Messi and with both parties clearly wanting to sign a new contract, it cannot be finalised due to financial and structural problems [rules relating to the Spanish league].
"Given this situation, Messi will not continue his relationship with Barcelona. Both parties lament deeply that the desires of the player and the club cannot be met.
"Barca would like to wholeheartedly thank the player for his contribution to the growth of the institution and wish him the best in his personal and professional life."

Spanish clubs must comply with a spending limit, which includes money spent on salaries and signings
, determined by LaLiga.
Barca's spending stood at over €600 million before the coronavirus pandemic but was reduced to €347m last season and is expected to be slashed even further for the upcoming campaign.
Therefore, to register Messi's new contract with the league, the Catalan club needed to reduce their wage bill or bring in a significant amount of money in transfers.
However, the club have failed to move on big earners
such as Miralem Pjanic, Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti and have so far failed to reach an agreement with some of the club's longer-serving players over wage cuts.
Talks are ongoing with Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto over salary adjustments.

Messi tried to leave Barca last summer after falling out with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu, but he ended up staying against his will.
Speculation has followed since, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain the two clubs that have been monitoring his situation most closely. They will now be the favourites to sign him on a free transfer.
The election of Joan Laporta as Bartomeu's successor in March had seemed to change the situation completely. Messi and his family are close to Laporta, who was the president when Messi broke into Barca's first team.
Laporta has always said he was "confident" of reaching an agreement for Messi to stay at the club and that the key was building a sporting project that would guarantee him success on the pitch.
However, sources have told ESPN that Messi has been left unconvinced by the work done by Laporta in the transfer market this summer.
Another source added that there was also a disagreement over the breakdown of the commission payments involved in the deal.

Messi's departure is a historic moment for the club. He first joined Barca's academy in 2000 and has gone on to play 778 games for the club, breaking Xavi Hernandez's appearance record last season.
He has scored 672 goals, another club record, and has helped Barca win, among other trophies, 10 LaLiga titles and 4 Champions League
In the process, he has won the Ballon d'Or on six occasions and is among those considered the greatest to play the game.

As the articles says, Messi leaving Barcelona is a shock. He's been playing for Barcelona since he was 13, he played in every youth teams in the club and played his first match with the senior team in 2004, at age 17.
Until a few monthes ago, to every soccer fans, Messi and Barcelona were one. One couldn't imagine Barcelona without Messi or Messi somewhere else than Barcelona. Messi not playing for Barcelona was like Larry Bird not playing for the Celtics.

I'm pretty sure that, without the pandemic, Messi would hjave never left Barcelona, he would have spent his entire career for Barcelona. And even as a PSG -the club most likely to register him- it breaks my heart to know that it won't happen, that he's gonna leave Barcelona...

As somebody who hates Barcelona and PSG, it's very much a case of whoever wins, we lose. Fun seeing Barca falling to pieces though.

The Barca fan in my family believes it's a ploy to get La Liga to up the salary cap.

“We’d like more flexibility from La Liga if possible, like other leagues across the continent have done for teams ... Then, we could sign some more players ... As for Messi, it’s going well. We’re trying to resolve the issues that need to be resolved."

“They’re important, but we’re getting on with this.”

I should probably read the Board Rules...
In Europe football is religion!!
In recent years, sheikhs, Russians and Chinese have and are ruining football .
Now football is becoming like the NBA .. only money counts

What happened with City passing on Ronaldo? How fun would it have been to see Messi and him opposing each other in the Champions League group state?

PS - In addition to throwing on some New Order today, I necro-bumped a thread in honour of CR 7's return to United. (It was only from 2011 though, not 2009 like CR 7's last game with United. :()

Apparently United weren't aware he was leaving Juve until the rumours of City bidding for him became public. Then his old teammates told him to come home.

Tbh I think City need him more than United as they haven't bought a striker this summer, but if Cavani doesn't return to United then he's a key signing. United need a midfielder urgently though so all the Ronaldos in the world won't help that, and they're not winning the league without one.

... and he scores 2 in today's match. Well worth the investment.

His movement and link play with Pogba, Fernandes and Greenwood was instantly on point. Ridiculous player. If United actually had a central midfield, we would win the title at a canter. As it is, we'll probably break the single season goalscoring record and finish fourth. At least it will be fun though and finally make us forget the wretched Moyes / van Gaal / Mourinho years.

WTF happened today. How do they lose to the Young Boys? (That was a new one to me.) Ronaldo had 1. The only one.

No defensive midfield cover and a manager who is tactically inept, that's what happened. Ronaldo may be a freak of nature but he can't alone score us to winning trophies. This club is going in the right direction but still has so far to go.

They beat Aston Villa and got a favorable draw for the 4th round of the FA Cup. It must be pandemonium in Manchester tonight.
